Quick answer
You meant to start a deep work session at ten. Then it was half past, then lunch, and the afternoon went to email. Nothing was wrong with your plan. You just never got the moment to begin.
Focus reminder notifications in Flip Focus give you that moment. During the focus hours you choose, the app sends an optional nudge to start a session. When it arrives, you pick a session, put the phone face down, and you are working.
How focus reminders work
- Set your focus hours. Tell Flip Focus when you want to do focused work, for example a weekday morning block.
- Turn reminders on. They are optional, and your phone asks for notification permission the first time.
- Get a nudge during those hours. Reminders are planned a week ahead, so they arrive even on days you don’t open the app first.
- Start from the reminder. Choose a session and place your phone face down. The timer starts on its own.
The reminder doesn’t start anything for you. It is a prompt, not an alarm. The session only begins when you flip the phone, which keeps the decision with you.
Why a reminder to focus helps
Most plans for focused work fail at the start, not in the middle. The intention is there, but there is no clear moment to act on it, and something more urgent fills the gap. A reminder at a time you chose in advance turns “I should focus today” into “now is the time”.
It works best when the hours are realistic. Pick the time of day when you actually have room to focus, not the time you think you should. If mornings are full of meetings, a morning nudge just becomes one more notification to dismiss.
Making focus hours a habit
- Keep the same hours for a week before you change them. Consistency matters more than the perfect time.
- Start small. When the reminder arrives, a quick focus session is better than skipping because a long one feels too big.
- Check your streak. The Flip Focus dashboard shows how many days in a row you have focused, which makes the habit visible.
- Let the session protect itself. Once the phone is face down, auto-pause stops the timer if you pick it up, so the time you log is real.
Built-in alternatives
You can also set a plain recurring alarm or calendar reminder for your focus block, and that works for many people. The difference with Flip Focus reminders is that they lead straight into a session, so the step between being reminded and starting is as short as possible.
Limitations of focus reminders
- They don’t block apps or start a session automatically. Blocking runs only during a session you start.
- They don’t follow a shared or team calendar. Flip Focus has no accounts or team features.
- They are not required. If you would rather start on your own, leave them off. Everything else in the app works the same.
